From the beginning, it looks like Kirk has a few skeletons in his closet, but we knew that already (in Star Trek II he revealed that he cheated on the Kobayashi Maru test in Starfleet Academy). It's a little hard to tell what's happening because everything flashes by so fast. From what I could see, we have some womanizing, some conflict when Spock loses his temper (maybe we will finally hear his first name), an evil alien bad guy, at least one giant monster, explosions and phaser battles, womanizing, and the excellence of seeing the original uniforms on a movie screen. If JJ Abrams does it as well as he did the Transformers movie we're in for a treat.

I once heard that J Michael Straczinsky, the guy who created and wrote most of the episodes for Babylon 5, had offered to do a Star Trek series so people could see what Trek was really meant to be. Maybe if the movie rekindles people's interest in The Original Series (TOS), that could happen afterward. Whatever happens, it has been too long with no Star Trek on the air so this is a welcome development.

According to the news article, Kirk does get to tap that. I hope they show it tastefully. I don't recall any explicit sex in any Trek series or movie. It would mean crossing a line that maybe shouldn't be crossed.

I was just thinking about the Trek series and movies so far. Except for Enterprise, everything since TNG onward has been in the same general time period. The Enterprise-D visited Deep Space Nine during their initial episodes, and Voyager takes place during the Maquis revolution which was also the same time. So there's room for expansion slightly into the future, maybe ten years later or so. There are lots of different story lines available. The Klingons were always a big hit, and very popular with the fans. Maybe a series about a Klingon patrol ship would be of interest. I also enjoyed the two part series where Spock went to Romulus and we got to see some political intrigue. The Romulans are one of the majoe baddie races out there but we know very little about them. There's all kinds of room for stories about the Romulans and how they live their lives. One of the DS9 episodes was set on Ferenginar, and we got to see the Grand Nagus and learn all about how Ferengi internal politics works. There are plenty of potential new stories there. And I love the Andorians and would like to see more of that race. Maybe we could see the great grandson of Captain Shran, because every Trek series needs a role for Jeffrey Combs.

I want this movie to be very successful so we can get a decent Trek series back on the air. If Straczinsky could do what he said he wanted to do, we would probably have the most popular Trek series in history.

That is an excellent idea. There could be a Janeway, a Chakotay, a Paris, a Bashir, a Klingon from the House of Moog, a Bajoran Nerys, a Sisko, an Archer, a Reed, a Tucker...it could be a long list of characters cycling through in different episodes, including maybe descendants of some of the villains and other weekly guests. They could even revisit some of the planets from the earlier series and we could find out what happened later.

I'll bet Spock made whoopee with Leila in This Side of Paradise. If he didn't he should have!
