I'm of the mindset a preemptive ban will keep us from having to warn people. Look at that locked "ask simon furman a question" thread in TF discussion... it was nothing but negative, bitchy comments from Furman's detractors, and I decided there was absolutely nothing redeeming about the thread and the only direction it would be going was flame war or the trash, and I chose the trash, seeing as flame wars aren't allowed.
Did I do that right? |

I'm of the mindset that pre-emptive bans are wrong, and will never be done.
We don't punish people for what they MIGHT do, period. And we never will. That thread being closed wasn't the wrong thing, because the flames and the bickering were there. I don't like banning people, in case you haven't noticed.... But on the other hand, I think with a little effort some people can be integrated as useful posters. Some can't. But its up to all of us, admin, mods, and everyday user alike to use some common sense and not participate in what it is we claim the others are causing. I refuse to be broken I am who I am |

I meant Lock.
Doc was talking about preemptive bans and my brain switched the words. |

I think that each situation is dealt with on a case to case basis. It's difficult to say that we have a real clear-cut policy when it comes to stuff like this, since many differing factors can come into play. Sometimes, it's just a judgement or common sense call.

those're the words I wanted to hear, Strafeykins.
From now on, the official position SHOULD be "moderators are allowed to lock and move offensive threads at their discretion." I'm also really sick of people second guessing us... |
