I'm not sure I'd say it's -worse- than BM, that was pretty friggin horrible. It is certainly close to it though.

I second that.
Man, I think animation qualities hit their peak in the mid to late 90s, and it's been downhill ever since. One day, some animaters decided to do a crappy job, and it became a style that's plagued the industry. ![]() |

Argh! I missed it!
From what I saw in the commercials, there wasn't any actual transformation in the traditional sense, with moving, sliding and rotating parts. The car just leaped into the air, there was some kind of black jumbled smoke effect, and a robot emerged. It was the worst cheap imitation of a transformation I've seen so far. The first episode is coming on again on Saturday at 11 a.m. |

Yeah, pissed me off, I forgot about it until about 11pm yesterday, 3hrs too late. I then checked the schedule, figuring it'd be rerun within the next couple days, only to find it won't be on again until saturday morning.
This time i set my dvd recorder to record it. youtube.com/watch?v=6gqhN7-yBSQ At least the opening harkens back to the original, but the damned thing looks like the playskool version of TFs. ![]() ![]() Happiness is a warm poppy. I'm watching it now, and the characters are almost as terrible as the artwork. The story so far is nothing special either. I think this series officially trumps Bowel Movement as the worst TF series ever. Playskool to the extreme.
The only fun thing about it is that it takes place around lake erie, and I live near lake erie. (The show takes place in michigan & I'm in pennsylvania, but still...) ![]() ![]() Happiness is a warm poppy. Guess what? 208 people know what so far, do you? JAMMING Wanna see me naked? |

It's anime. I really, really dislike anime. It's cheaply done and it looks horrible compared to real cartoons. Is the story true to the original? Do Transformers still come from Cybertron?

It is not Anime, It is American Cartoon. Anime is way better artwork

To me, anime is the type of animation that shows nothing but streaky lines in the background when a character is supposed to be moving fast. Real cartoons show the character moving past actual scenery. If this type of junk is now being drawn by American companies, It's way worse than I thought.

That cartoon is NOT friggin anime! I'm really getting tired of seeing people call it that. -Real- anime is extremely good, way better than the vast majority of "cartoons". This kind of crap is just a pisspoor imitation of one exaggerated anime style.
Ever watch the original voltron series (lions or vehicle)? Ever watch robotech? Those were anime (REAL anime). Watch inuyasha or bleach, those are real anime. This transformers crap is a poor imitation of one type of anime, which was intended for little children, like yugioh or pokemon, and actually owes more to the WB batman adventures, batman & robin, etc than it does to true anime. Don't look down on anime in general simply because all you've been exposed to is yugioh type crap. Some aspects are true to the original. Megatron is still the decepticon leader, starscream is still the greedy 2nd in command, prime is still the autobot leader (sort of), ratchet is still the medic, they still come from cybertron. There are many differences however: 1) Prime is only the leader of this one small group of autobots, and is generally looked upon as a failure (more like rodimus than optimus). 2) Ratchet is an ancient war vet, comparable to kup from g1. 3) Prowl is a ninja. 4) "Bumblebee" has a personality much closer to hot shot from armada/energon than to g1 bumblebee. 5) The allspark (which is a giant box, and generally comparable to vector sigma) opens up, much like the matrix did in the g1 movie. 6) Far from being optimus' brother, as implied in some of the g1 stuff, ultra magnus is much older than prime & much higher ranked. Magnus is the supreme commander (much like g1 prime was), while prime is closer to what g1 magnus was. 7) While most of the TFs' designs could harken back to g1 (is the artwork wasn't so terrible), megatron is clearly based on the recent movie. Not just his alt mode, but his robot mode as well. One thing that was extremely stupid on their part, is that they show a clip from g1 at the beginning. They're viewing it as a history tape, but all it does it illustrate even more clearly just how terrible the new artwork is. Much of the storyline could be a continuation of sorts from g1, in the same manner than BW was a continuation. They refer to "the great war" which happened a long time ago (and for which they used g1 footage as a history tape), and ratchet & magnus are currently ancient robots, which could have fought in such an old war. In could be assumed that prime, bumblebee, and prowl are young namesakes of the original characters. The 2 main inconsistancies with g1 are the allspark (g1 had the matrix & vector sigma, but no allspark, and this allspark isn't really like either the matrix nor vector sigma), and the fact that humans have no clue who or what the transformers are. (Although that last bit could be explained if you assumed that the TFs actually landed on some non-earth planet.) ![]() ![]() Happiness is a warm poppy. Outstanding! Thanks for the extremely detailed analysis of the show. It brings things more into focus for those of us who haven't seen it.
When I say "anime," what I'm thinking of specifically is the cartoon drawing style of Dragonball Z. It's a really cheap way of representing events, with kind of a cartoon shorthand, like the little comma-shaped water drop that appears near a character's head when he's worried. It represents a drop of sweat, but the animators can't be bothered to draw actual sweat beads on the character's head so they do that. It kind of pisses me off to see it and think that people are making money from that kind of ripoff animation. Also, it's often very strange because they inexplicably include a flying rabbit or some other bizarre animal. I have seen the other styles of Japanese animation (used to be called "Japanimation" for "Japan + animation" but stopped being used when people mistakenly thought it meant "Jap + animation"), and they are good. I'm talking about the Gundam Wing type of cartoon, with very detailed and well-drawn characters who are animated very smoothly. If that's called anime and the Dragonball crap is also called anime, then there should be separate labels used to differentiate the two styles. |

Any animation done in japan is known to the outside world as anime. The styles vary greatly. Hell, look at american comic books, first you have the obvious divisions between the heavily drawn action comics, the lightly drawn archie comics, and the just plain wacky children's comics. Then you have countless different styles within most of those groups (I'd love to shoot the moron who does some of the marvel comics, the ones were all the characters have massive squared off hands & heads, and usually wear those retarded baggy street thug pants).
..Or just look at american cartoons. You have the detailed stuff like G1 and the old gi joe series, then you have yogi bear, gobots, scooby, bugs bunny, not to mention the new wave of cheaply drawn claptrap like foster's home for imaginary friends or chowder. ![]() ![]() Happiness is a warm poppy.
