There have been experiments in cybernetics that allow computers to be able to detect odors. Nothing terribly advanced. Cybertronian technology is far more advanced. Even in G1 TFs have been able to smell.

Plus Pheremones are real and animals use it in stuff like mating. And Ratchet IS a medic. Simnce they all learned english on the web it wouldnt be hard to understand Ratchet perusing as much medical stuff as he could.
